Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)
PSD2 (PAYMENT SERVICES DIRECTIVE)
The Payment Services Directive (PSD2) is a new law within the European Union that was introduced in January 2018 designed to benefit customers by enhancing transparency, giving you greater control over your data and will further protect your banking and purchases online. PSD2 comes into force on 14thSeptember 2019 and will affect how you access your credit union account online, tablet, mobile and in our in-branch kiosk services.

In addition to your current log in details, there will be additional security credentials called Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)
WHAT IS STRONG CUSTOMER AUTHENTICATION (SCA)
Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is the process that validates the identity of you the user when you log in to access online and mobile banking, and for further services such as making payments or changing your address.
From September you will be asked for additional security credentials. We will be sending you notifications to ask you to confirm that you have authorised payments, logged in or wish to make changes to your accounts. We will also implement additional fraud prevention measures. Our online terms and conditions will be updated to take account of these changes.
HOW DOES SCA WORK?
From the 14th September when accessing your account or approving certain actions, you will be required to authenticate yourself using two out of three of the following:
- Something you know – i.e. password or PIN
- Something you have – i.e. mobile application
- Something you are – i.e. fingerprint with OneTouch ID
WHEN DOES SCA COME INTO EFFECT?
SCA comes into effect on the 14th September 2019.
WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?
The second Payment Services Directive (PSD2) came into effect on the 13th January 2018 which contained 12 mandates. One of these mandates covered strong customer authentication, the Regulatory Technical Standards (RTS) which are effective from the 14th September 2019, details how the mandate should be implemented. Accordingly, all account providers, online retailers etc. are required to comply with these Standards.
WHEN IS SCA APPLIED?
SCA will be used when you do any of the following actions on your cuOnline account:
- Access your account,
- Initiate a payment,
- Initiate an action which may imply a risk of payment fraud, such as creating a new payee.
CAN I OPT OUT OF USING SCA?
No, the EU directive is mandatory and all cuOnline users will be required to complete SCA.
ARE YOUR DETAILS UP TO DATE?
To make this change easier for you please check that your mobile phone number and personal details are up to date on your cuOnline profile. Please check your details by the 31st of August 2019. This can be done by logging in to your cuOnline Account using your Username, Pin and Password. When logged in go to ‘Personal Details’ and ensure that your personal details are up to date. Click ‘Confirm’ and your personal details will be updated.
HOW TO REACTIVATE FORGOTTEN LOG IN DETAILS
Username– if you can’t remember your Username go to www.caracreditunion.ie click on Log In and Click on ‘Forgotten Username’ and you will be asked for your email address with which you registered and will be able to change your Username
Password-If you can’t remember your Password please email [email protected] and we will reset your password and generate an email to be sent to you to change your password.
PIN- if you can’t remember your 8 digit PIN that was sent to you by post please email [email protected] and we will send you a new PIN by Post.
CU ONLINE +
In preparation of PSD2 on the 1st September 2019, we are updating our Cu Online Banking service on the 1stSeptember 2019 to Cu Online +. Cu Online + gives you access to the same level of services that we offer in branch through our online and mobile experience.
Cu Online+ comes with improved functuality across statements, payments, payees, lodgements, member messaging area and managing your documents while at the same time reducing the steps it takes to make an online transaction. Services will also be improved offering a seamless log in process with OneTouch ID, built in loan calculator and online loan application.
Touch ID login service allows you to access your online account using your fingerprint reader on your smartphone or tablet. Using the latest technology, you can access online banking to check your balance, view statements, transfer funds and pay bills on the go. One Touch ID means you no longer have to remember your pin and password with every login, which makes managing your Cara Credit Union account more convenient than ever.
